History of the Society

The society was started in 2013 at the first social of the societies committee. The committee were in Spoons, getting to know each other, when the topic of starting a Harry Potter Society was brought up by the societies officer. Two of the committee members, Charmilie and Jake, made an unbreakable vow to start up the society that year. Unfortunately Jake broke the unbreakable vow when he quit to focus on his other commitments and we’d like to tell you he died (well not really, he’s quite a nice guy) but that isn’t how it works in the Muggle World and unfortunately he walks among us a free man.

Despite this setback, Charmilie endeavored to start the society anyways with two other members of the committee, Sanjiv & Talhah, who took up positions on the committee. Harry, Vino and Writ were then added to the committee and thus the society was formed! The society was ratified in November and the first event, the sorting ceremony,  appropriately took place on Friday the 13th of December. The society won Best New Society of the Year at the Students Union Awards that year.

2014/15 saw the first full year the society was in operation and drew in over 200 paying members. Under the leadership of Talhah & Wilf the society held 2-3 events a month including quidditch and laid the foundation for the society to work on over the next few years. The committee was modified and took on double roles relating to the function of the society and as faculty members of the QM School of Witchcraft & Wizardry. The society was nominated for Best Society of the Year that year at the Students Union Awards.
